Scenic Drives Near Gilbert AZ
Scenic drives take you in every direction around Gilbert. You can drive all the way to the Grand Canyon, but there’s plenty to do that is much closer. You can drive through the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, witnessing some of the most unusual and dramatic landscapes in the country.
If you want to beat the heat, you can drive the Sky Island Scenic Byway up to Mount Lemmon. At 9,000 feet, temperatures are about 25 degrees cooler than the desert floor.
Another drive can take you from the Sonoran Desert to Massai Point. The Chiricahua Scenic Drive takes you from saguaro cactus at low elevations to deep green fir and pine forests at higher elevations. The most exciting geological features are the towering rock formations.
If you have TRD equipment on a Toyota truck or SUV, you may want to head to the Apache Trail. Much of this 44-mile road is paved but after Tortilla Flat, it becomes a rough trail that requires a vehicle with off-roading equipment and a tight build. This historical road takes you through the Superstition Mountains and all the way to Lake Roosevelt if your vehicle can handle the trail road.
